Chebaiywa’s Housing Crisis: Bringing Hope, One Home at a Time

Chebaiywa’s Housing Crisis: Bringing Hope, One Home at a Time

James 2:15-17

“Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

In many parts of the world, a housing crisis might mean rising costs or a shortage of available homes. But in our village of Chebaiywa, Kenya, the crisis is much more profound. For many, having a safe, warm, and dry place to sleep remains an unattainable dream.

Home #4 Mudding Day: Building Homes, Building Hope

Thanks to the generosity of so many, our "11 Homes in 11 Months" campaign is on track to reach its goal by December. Each home built is not just a structure; it's a symbol of hope and community. This initiative has brought our ministry closer to the people we serve, revealing heartbreaking stories of resilience and need.

Recently, we encountered a particularly challenging situation. Eight young men, mentored by their coach for years, have found themselves in a tough spot. Living in a cramped, two-room house with no electricity and unsafe conditions, they’ve had to rely on the support of our ministry. Originally from a region several hours away, these young men came to Chebaiywa for better opportunities, only to face new challenges in their pursuit of stability.

Their stories are difficult. Some were raised by grandmothers or aunts after losing their parents to alcoholism, while others were left to fend for themselves when their parents abandoned them. Despite these hardships, they continue to persevere, with one young man even sending what little he earns back to his sister, who is still raising their younger siblings.

One of the biggest obstacles we face is that these young men do not have inheritance or family land, making them ineligible for our "11 Homes in 11 Months" project. Instead, we have rented a dormitory room from the neighboring church. We are currently preparing this space, painting it, installing beds, and making it a safe, comfortable environment for these young men. We’ll be sharing pictures of the progress soon!
